This page
is being linked to a new website
dedicated to the issues of stress and depression in
physicians.
There have been several recently reported
physician suicides
related to litigation stress. But depression and suicide are
surprisingly common in physicians.
An Emergency physician
suicide related to unethical expert witness behavior in
malpractice litigation.
It is well established that women
physicians are more prone to depression. Medical
students too are affected. Many high achieving
persons in all fields are depressed and often
undertreated. In physicians, treatment is not sought because
of concerns about licensure.
But many inspirational people have
suffered from, and overcome depression.
A recent article
will be helpful in explaining our interest in this related
issue.
A survey on EP depression is detailed in this press
release.
NOTE: A new PBS special on
physician depression and suicide, entitled Strugling in
Silence is due out in May 2008.
